Yes, you can update the profile by following these simple steps
To change a user’s profile:
1. Click on: Setup | Administration Setup | Manage Users | Users.
2. Find the user you want to change to a different profile.
3. Click on the “Edit” link next to the user name.
4. In the right-hand column of the user information change the profile from whatever is currently set to the new profile you want them to have.
5. Click “Save”. - [adinserter block='9']

I think yes, you can go user detail page, after clicking the Edit button, you are saying you can’t change the profile of a user.
Navigate to Setup | Administration Setup | Manage Users | Users.
2. Find the User whose Profile you would like to customize.
3. Click the Edit link next to the Username.
4. In the right-hand column of User information, change the Profile to the new Profile.
5. Click Save.Thanks
