AI Basics at a Glance
Because you seem like the naturally intelligent type, we’re guessing you already know a fair amount about AI from the Artificial Intelligence for Business badge you earned. But before we go into more detail about Einstein, here’s a quick recap of what we covered in that module.
- AI makes our lives easier with personalized recommendations, intelligent search results, and automation of tasks (but not killer robots).
- AI is at an evolutionary tipping point with the convergence of data, computing power, and algorithms.
- AI is embedded in the applications that we already use in our consumer lives and is surfaced inherently through various user interfaces (UIs).
Smart Assistants: A Form of AI
Smart assistants are a form of AI that can perform and automate tasks for any individual or group. Over the past few years, smart assistants have surged in terms of their capabilities. If you’ve ever asked Apple’s Siri what the weather was looking like today, or Amazon’s Alexa to order you some new kitchen supplies, or Google’s Assistant to play you the newest Drake album, you’ve interacted with a smart assistant.
What makes this assistant so smart? Have a look.
- Voice input: Yep. Your savvy assistant has made it its full-time job to actually listen to you when you speak.
- Natural language understanding (subset of natural language processing): It’s one thing for someone to listen to you, and another to really hear what you’re saying. This technology means your assistant has the ability to truly understand what you’re saying when you speak and to respond accordingly.
- Voice output (natural language generation): There’s nothing like the art of conversation. So appreciate the fact that this technology enables your assistant to speak information back to you, as opposed to displaying it on a screen for you to read. (Bonus: It gives your eyes a break from screens!)
- Intelligent interpretation: Anticipating your needs is key. This technology can figure out what it is you want next, based on context, past behaviors, and data (for example, ordering sushi every Tuesday night online, Google surfaces ads around that time next week for sushi).
- Agency: We’re always looking for an overachiever. This allows your assistant to take action on things you didn't necessarily request. A good example: Assistants schedule follow-up meetings based on unfinished action items on meeting notes post-meeting.
